Colorful New York-based concert promoter Jake Szufnarowski will revive
the Rodney Speed Experience as part of his annual birthday celebration on
Saturday. This incarnation of the ever-changing group finds guitarist
Scott Metzger, The Wildhearts’ Ginger, bassist Bill Stites, 2 Skinnee Js’
Eddie Eyeball and an assortment of other characters backing Rodney Speed,
a longtime employee at New York’s lauded Wetlands Preserve. The Rodney
Speed Experience made its public debut during one of Szufnarowski’s many
powerjams at Wetlands in 2001 and, over the years, has included members of
moe., The Duo and Guster. Since Szufnarowski himself has received some
musical notoriety as of late by playing in The Bee Gees cover band Tragedy
there is also a good chance he will take the stage with his more famous
friends.
Szufnarowski actually has something of a history putting together
supergroups for his birthday celebrations, most notably when he formed the
Led Zeppelin cove rband Bustle in Your Hedgerow in 2003. This Saturday’s
performance will take place on The Temptress as part of Szufnarowski’s
Rocks Off Boat Cruise, with Kid Koala also set to perform.
