Singer and pianist Diana Krall has parlayed multiple multi-platinum albums and Grammy awards into establishing herself as the leading female vocalist in the contemporary jazz scene. After a recent visit to Rio de Janeiro, she was struck by the warm and rapt audiences who harbored such love for the bossa nova of their homeland, so she decided to return and film a concert in this beautiful Brazilian setting
Right from the start, Krall cuts loose on a super swinging turn on "I Love Being Here with You." As her ace band quickly follows her through twists and sudden turns, she quickly proves that her live show is anything but a slick and calculated affair. Later, she really throws caution to the wind by busting out and improvising on a fast flying romp through a number her band had barely rehearsed, "Cheek to Cheek." Her soul is also readily on display while grinding through "Frim Fram Sauce," showcasing her unique ability to become musically unhinged while remaining undeniably cool.
Of course, it’s that undeniable cool air that lends itself to the undeniably cool, sensual feel of Brazil’s bossa nova. Krall knows what her audience wants, so while backed by a local orchestra, she treats the crowd to several of their favorites, including "So Nice," "Quiet Nights," and "The Boy from Ipanema." Although one might initially wonder why Brazilians never tire of hearing these songs, when listening to Krall, it’s evident that she’s bringing something unique to the party. While the chanteuse has a smoky voice, its far from perfect. There are notes that dont quite nail the pitch, and sometimes, she doesnt entirely support her singing. However, these flaws are what constitute Kralls charm. She has the guts to allow her vulnerability to shine through, and that is exactly what the bossa nova needs. Then again, that is exactly why Diana Krall is known as one of the leading interpreters of the 20th century songbook, and her fine performances on this DVD only reinforce that title.
