Estranged Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts sat in with Furthur at Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads last night. Betts emerged partway through Furthur’s second set for a take on “Viola Lee Blues” and remained onstage for “Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks),” the second portion of “Viola Lee Blues” and his own Allman Brothers Band classic “Blue Sky.” Though this is Betts’ first appearance with Furthur, he has guested with Lesh and Phil & Friends in recent years. Furthur also covered “Blue Sky” with Warren Haynes on vocals on March 13, 2011. In addition, last night’s setlist included a cover of Johnny Russell’s “Catfish John,” which Furthur introduced into their catalog earlier this year.
Betts will perform at Del Mar, CA’s Del Mar Fairgrounds tomorrow while Furthur will kick off their summer tour at Pawtucket, RI’s McCoy Stadium on July 5.
