Umphrey’s McGee guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger hit the stage at Park West for their annual holiday show that featured a slew of special guests including their own UM bandmates Joel Cummins and Andy Farag, among others.
The one-set show featured a wide variety of covers and UM originals, as the duo mixed in tunes like “Similar Skin,” “Gulf Stream” and “Cut the Cable” before bringing out Farag, Cummins and frequent holiday show guest Mike Racky on pedal steel for “Susanah,” “Syncopated Strangers” and a trio of Zeppelin covers in “Dancing Days,” “Bron-Yr-Aur” and “Down By the Seaside.”
Bayliss then took to the piano for his own original “Push and Pull” before playing Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” on piano with Cinninger on drums. Cummins, Farag, Racky and Wade Wilby then all joined the fold for “Two Dips” as well as a take on Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid.”
Bayliss, Cinninger, Racky, Cummins and Farag then all closed the set with a run that included covers of Squeeze’s “Tempted” as well as ELO’s “Showdown” and Ween’s “Baby Bitch” along with UM originals “Comma Later” and “Weight Around.” The ensemble returned for an encore of Pat Metheny’s “Last Train Home,” UM’s “Upward” and The Doobie Brothers’ “Black Water.”
