Phish came out the gate strong with an excellent first night of their run at Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood in Atlanta. A rare show-opening “Prince Caspian” got things started before the unfinished number moved into “No Men In No Man’s Land,” a new track that has been getting a lot of love on the band’s current tour. Solid takes on “Ghost,” “The Wedge” and “The Moma Dance” followed before the Gordon/Murawski tune “How Many People Are You?” made its second-ever appearance during a Phish show. “Rift” then gave way to a standard “Mike’s Song” > “I Am Hydrogen” > “Weekapaug Groove” to wrap up the set.

The biggest moment of the night came at the beginning of the second set, when Phish launched into a massive “Kill Devil Falls” that went surprisingly deep into Type II territory. The 23+ minute tune segued into a “Martian Monster” that saw Trey Anastasio play Mike Grodon’s bass from behind from behind his bandmate back for the second time on their summer tour. Anastasio then hopped on the keyboards with Page McConnell, as Gordon took over the drum kit (Anastasio also joined in a a few moments later) and Jon Fishman held down the bass.

A well-jammed “Twist” marked another highlight for the night before “Back on the Train” seamlessly segued into “Reba.” The second set finally came to a close with a “Bathtub Gin” that opened with some Reba-style whistling from Anastasio, while standard renditions of “Farmhouse” and “Character Zero” formed the night’s encore.

Phish will return to Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood tonight for the second show of their stand at the venue.
