Big Star’s scheduled homecoming performance at Memphis’ Levitt Shell in Overton Park this Saturday, May 15, has been turned into a tribute to Alex Chilton. The group’s founding member died of a heart attack in March. Big Star’s final lineup—original drummer Jody Stephens and latter day members John Auer and Ken Stringfellow—will be joined by a range of guests during the performance, including former Big Star bassist Andy Hummel, R.E.M guitarist Mike Mills and The Raconteurs guitarist Brendan Benson. Hummel, one of the band’s co-founders, joined Big Star for the first time in thirty years at a Chilton tribute in Austin, TX this past March.
Chilton played his final show with Big Star at Brooklyn, NY’s Masonic Temple this past November. A special VIP package for Saturday’s show, featuring are admission to the concert and a soundcheck party prior to the show, is also available.
