Mike Gordon’s winter tour rolled into Cincinnati on Jan. 23. The bassist was joined for three songs in the first set by Mad Dog and his Filthy Secret Horns, made up of Michael “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou on trumpet, Ben Walkenhauer on saxophone and Jason Branscum on trombone.

The show began with “Equilibrium” followed by “Spock’s Brain.” After a duo of “Put Down The Phone” and “Normal Phoebe,” Gordon invited Mad Dog and His Filthy Little Secret Horns for a trio of songs to conclude the set: “I Am Random,” “You Strike My Main Never” and the set-closing “Steps.”

The second set kicked off with “Face” > “Stealing Jamaica.” Later, the band performed a rendition of “Crazy Sometimes,” followed by “Sughn Never Sets” to close the frame. “Gimme Some Lovin'” served as the encore.

Mad Dog’s horns appeared with Umphrey’s McGee during their New Year’s Eve show; however, during that show, the horn lineup was Mad Dog on trumpet, Chris Ott on trombone and Jeff Coffin and Josh Quinlan on saxophone.

In a recent interview with the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Gordon revealed that he and collaborator Leo Kottke are close to finishing a new duo album. Gordon was also recently announced as a performer at the LOCKN’ Festival.
