Last night, Umphrey’s McGee played their first of three shows this weekend, which will mark the finale of their current tour leg, and the band welcomed a very special guest for their show at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA, for a bustout cover and more.
Reprising his role as keyboardist for pseudo-legendary rock outfit Spinal Tap from the 1984 mockumentary This is Spinal Tap, David Kaffinetti joined the band as a surprise guest at the tail end of the first set, when UM dusted off their cover of Spinal Tap’s wonderfully redundant “Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight,” during which Kaffinetti showcased some shredding organ chops. Umphrey’s played the tune several times in their first half-decade together but hadn’t revisited it since December 2004.
“Savage” would return in the second set to jam with the band on UM’s own “Resolution,” which came just before the finale of “Den.” The group then closed out the night with their “National Loser Anthem“—a mixture of Radiohead’s “National Anthem” and Beck’s “Loser” off UM’s mashup album Zonkey.
See the full setlist below as it appears in our Box Scores section. Umphrey’s McGee play tonight at The Wiltern in Los Angeles before heading to San Diego tomorrow.
