My Morning Jacket closed their 2011 tour with a headlining appearance at New York’s Madison Square Garden last night. The band’s first and only other appearance other than a New Year’s Eve headlining show on December 31, 2008, the night featured a number of special guests and one rather unique cover. Band of Horses opened the night and, a few songs into MMJ’s set, frontman Ben Bridwell sang on “Wonderful (The Way I Feel).” The Elvis Perkins in Dearland horns also sat in on a few songs throughout the night, including “Dancefloors,” “Holdin On To Black Metal” and a few other selections.

Longtime Gill Scott-Heron flute collaborator Brian Jackson also emerged for an extended solo during “Dondante” and returned during My Morning Jacket’s encore for a take on Scott-Heron’s 1974 gem “The Bottle” (Jackson performed on the original version of he song). At the end of the night, Jackson along with the members of Band of Horses and the Dearland Horns all took the stage for the sing-along finale “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.” The Christmas classic appears on MMJ’s new holiday iTunes release.
