The members of Phish and their dads backstage last night

Phish closed out the first leg of their 2011 Summer Tour last night at Portsmouth, VA’s nTelos Pavilion. The show opened with a special Father’s Day version of the rarity “Harpua.” Instead of a traditional “Harpua” narration, each of the band members’ fathers—Jack McConnell, Leonard Fishman, Ernest Anastasio and Robert Gordon—sang on the song (their vocal contributions included the character Jimmy’s father’s lines in the song). This was the first time all four ‘Phish Dads’—who are collectively known as C.O.D.—have taken the stage with the band at the same time. The show’s Father’s Day theme continued as the group brought all their children onstage for the third year in a row during “Brother.” At one point, both the band’s fathers and their children were onstage at the same time.

Later in the set, the band paid tribute to E-Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who passed away on Saturday, with a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Thunder Road.” Though this was Phish’s first stab at the song, the band covered “Born to Run” in 1999 as well as both “Bobby Jean” and “Glory Days” with Springsteen in 2009. Later in the show, Anastasio also revealed that his daughter Eliza consistantly beats him on the Guitar Hero version of “Wilson.”

Next up for Phish is Super Ball IX in early July.
