In honor of the New Year’s Eve holiday, which occurred on Dec. 31, Lotus ignited a two-night run at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colo., which kicked off the evening before on Dec. 30. The initial gig was an explosive two-set performance teeming with favorable moments, from the first frame’s “Drums” to a later rendition of “Umbilical Moonset” and more. The energy of the first evening bled over into night two as the ensemble took their final stand of 2022.
Lotus’ Dec. 31 concert started with “Middle Road,” which initially appeared on their 2013 LP, Build, before digging deeper into their archives and pulling out the 2006 released track, “Blue Giant.” Next, the jammers paired “Pluck” with “Lucid Awakening,” which was capped by a run-through of “Invincibility of Youth.” The night’s initial frame brought forth an impressive rendition of “Golden Ghost,” which melted into the set’s final song, a cover of the Talking Heads classic, “Once in a Lifetime.”
For their second frame, Lotus worked into a track off their recently cut album, Bloom & Recede, on “Pacific Glow.” Then, “Neon Tubes Pt I” kicked off an unmatched sequence of musical peaks and valleys as the ensemble moved into a cover of Disclosures’ “When The Fire Starts to Burn,” which merged into “Neon Tubes Pt II,” followed by “Wax” and “It’s All Clear to Me Now.” As the night’s last set continued to unfold, notes of “Wax” appeared once again, before a debut cover of “Stardust (Music Sounds Better with You),” initially penned by Stardust.
The aforementioned debut ran over and intersected with a take on Daft Punk’s “Around the World.” Then, for the last song of the set, the group returned to “Wax.” Then, after wrapping their final main frame, the band ripped into “Umbilical Moonrise,” which also appeared on their Dec. 30 setlist, before capping their New Year’s Eve stand with “Debris.” Also of note, the band ushered in 2023 with a balloon drop that engulfed the Centennial State venue and captured the ecstatic energy felt over two nights on stage in Boulder, Colo.
