After debuting a Mike Gordon tune on Tuesday night, Trey Anastasio got his turn to bring a new track into the Phish repertoire on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater.

The band opened the show with their first-ever “Evolve,” a track that Anastasio penned during quarantine and later released on his 2020 solo LP Lonely Trip.

Next, “Free” marked the first repeat of summer tour (save for “Weekapaug Groove” which appeared as an extended tease in Arkansas before a full rendition in Alpharetta).

And while the set-one-ending “Theme From the Bottom”> “Suzy Greenberg”> “Fluffhead” was certainly a highlight, it was the band’s jam-heavy second frame which really made headlines in the Phish-iverse.

Fans were abuzz after the show, chronicling the smooth, and tease-heavy, “Ghost”> “Bathtub Gin”> “Also Sprach Zarathustra”> “Split Open and Melt” segment, proving once again that Phish are at the top of their game this summer.

For good measure, the band encored with a blissful “Character Zero.”
