Talking Heads are among this recipients of the Grammys 2021 Special Merit Awards.

The art rock pioneers will receive a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, alongside Selena, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Lionel Hampton and Marilyn Horne.

Talking Heads have never won a Grammy, despite being nominated twice – in 1983 for Best Rock Performance (“Burning Down The House”) as well as in 1988 for Best Concept Music Video (“Storytelling Giants”).

The last official Talking Heads performance took place at the band’s 2002 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

Since then, David Byrne has kept busy with a litany of projects, most recently winning critical acclaim for his American Utopia album/tour/Broadway show. Before COVID-19 brought the music industry to a halt, guitarist Jerry Harrison had scheduled a massive tour with Turkuaz in celebration of Remain in Light. Drummer Chris Frantz also found recent success with his 2020 memoir Remain in Love: Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Tina – as well as sporadic touring with his wife/Talking Heads bassist Tina Weymouth.

The ceremony will air on Jan. 31, 2021 on CBS and will be hosted by Trevor Noah.
