John Mayer is the guest on the latest episode of Eric Krasno’s ‘Plus One’ podcast, discussing songwriting, discovering new music and much more. The interview was recorded at the 2018 LOCKN’ Festival through Relix Magazine.

According to a press release, “Krasno and Mayer discuss discovering new music, how the role of being a fan has changed, and the importance of writing a hit song. Mayer explains the four rules he applies to the songs he’s working on, what he means when he describes a song as ‘Sally in the alley’, and how he approaches songwriting as he gets older. Krasno and Mayer get deep on guitar players like Jerry Garcia and Stevie Ray Vaughn, and he tells Krasno about that time he talked to Eric Clapton about The Dead.

“At this point in my career now it’s like, there can be a really good song–but if it’s not me, I just refuse to put it out anymore,” Mayer says during the episode.

Mayer and Leon Bridges recently released a new song and video, “Inside Friend,” created entirely during quarantine.

Episodes of ‘Plus One’ are released every Monday; previous guests have included Dave Matthews, Khruangbin’s Laura Lee and Chris Robinson.
