Academy Award winner Spike Lee is set to direct the filmed version of David Byrne’s American Utopia, a stage show which has been running on Broadway since October of 2019.

Participant, a production company dedicated to producing media intended to encourage social change, will serve as the lead financier and executive producer on the film. Byrne and Lee will also receive executive producer credits.

“Pinch me,” Byrne said (via press release). “This couldn’t have worked out better for this project. Spike Lee directing and Participant producing — two socially engaged teams, well, three if you count us in the band, coming together in what I feel will be something moving, important, and unlike anything anyone has seen before.”
