After getting rained-out the evening prior, Dave Matthews Band returned to Jones Beach on Thursday, July 18 for a make-up gig, filled with fan favorites, covers and a sit-in by saxophonist James Casey.

“Thank you so much for making your way back this evening,” Matthews said early in the show to the excited audience. “We hope we get it right for ya. Thank you so much again.”

Indeed, Matthews and company rewarded fans for returning to the venue on Thursday night, starting off with their first version of “The Last Stop” since September 1, 2018. (Fans were particularly relieved to hear the Before These Crowded Streets cut since it originally appeared on the rained out, Wednesday night setlist, as per a photo circulating among DMB forums.)

On Thursday night, the jams continued with a spirited “Corn Bread,” including some nice slide work by guitarist Tim Reynolds.

Later, a take on “The Song That Jane Likes” offered a tease of the rarity “Kill the Preacher” (last heard in full 10/17/2015) and, saxophonist Jeff Coffin (who had to leave the stage due to illness Wednesday night) reclaimed his spot in the brass section with standout solos on “Lover Lay Down” and “What Would You Say.”

Thursday also featured plenty of covers, with Matthews taking off his guitar for a mid-set, dance-laden version of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and, following an initial “Jimi Thing,” the band invited James Casey to add his sax to a blend of AC/DC’s “Back in Black” with the BeeGees “Stayin’ Alive,” which segued nicely into Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle.”

The band encored with an emotive “Where Are You Going,” followed by a celebratory “Louisana Bayou.” As that final jam hit its peak, a visibly excited Matthews danced and jumped around the stage, and conveyed his gratitude by lingering onstage after its final notes taking selfies and shaking hands with fans in the pit before his final goodbye.
