Gov’t Mule welcomed frequent collaborator and saxophonist Ron Holloway to the stage on Wednesday night for brass-infused versions of Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon,” the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One” and Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West.”

The Charlottesville, Va. show began with a pairing of “Traveling Tune”> “Rocking Horse” and later treated fans to a nice “Gameface”> “Mountain Jam”> “Gameface” segment.

Gov’t Mule closed their first set with the previously mentioned “Spanish Moon,” which saw guitarist Warren Haynes offering some nice slide guitar solos and Holloway channeling the Tower of Power in his triumphant sax work.

Set two was highlighted by a “Like Flies” with teases of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Les Brers in A Minor,” but the real gem of the second half was the three-part, set closing “Fallen Down”> “The Other One” jam> “Traveling Tune,” with Holloway jumping in for the Grateful Dead portion.

The stand-alone encore of Tom Waits’ “Going Out West” kept the spirit extra celebratory, with Holloway on sax and Chris Vos of The Record Company sitting in. The tune also included lyrical teases of Frank Zappa’s “Cheepnis” and musical allusions to classic TV theme songs from Batman and Peter Gunn.
