After an impressive outing at DelFest, the String Cheese Incident continued their run at The Capitol Theatre on Sunday night, performing Old & In The Way favorite “Midnight Moonlight,” Talking Heads’ “Burning Down The House” and Jerry Garcia Band’s version of “Tore Up Over You,” as well as a batch of originals.
“Are y’all fired up out there?” Bill Nershi asked the crowd before SCI jumped into an opening “Vertigo.”
From there, a nice “Black and White”> “Can’t Wait Another Day” segment bled into the aforementioned “Midnight Moonlight.” Next came “Valley of the Jig,” before the band really hit their stride on a set-ending “Sirens”> “Restless Wind.”
The second half kept the energy soaring upward with a killer “Just One Story”> “Rosie” jam. Later, a surprise version of JGB favorite “Tore Up Over You” acted as another nod to The Cap’s storied history with Garcia and the Grateful Dead. However, it was the mid-set “Burning Down The House” that really got the crowd fired up. (The walls of The Capitol Theatre were even lit-up to appear as if they themselves were on fire.)
To finish the show, SCI brought their second set full circle, offering “Birdland”> “Wheel Hoss”> “Birdland,” before returning to its opening tune “Just One Story.”
After an applause break, Capitol Theatre owner Peter Shapiro took the stage to praise the band, saying, “This is why we do what we do.”
To juxtapose the jam-heavy show, SCI closed their Sunday night at the Cap with an emotive “Barstool” and reminded fans to return for their final show on Monday.
