Three decades after The Smashing Pumpkins released their 1995 third studio album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the project endures as the cornerstone of their legacy and source of some of their biggest hits. This fall, they’ll honor the record with the Rat in a Cage Tour, making 27 stops across the US and Canada from Sept. 30 to Nov. 12. Each show will feature “two unique sets celebrating Mellon Collie at 30 & nearly four decades of unruly hits & dark treasures.”
“Staging a Mellon Collie-themed show is something we’ve discussed for over a decade, and finally the stars have aligned and exactly on the terms I’d set: which was to build a special night around its most enduring aspirations and ideas,” frontman Billy Corgan detailed in a statement. “With set 1 of the Rats In A Cage tour exclusively featuring Mellon Collie songs in a highly theatrical setting, and set 2 drawing from the rest of our canon so that there’s a decent amount of variance as to what songs we’ll play from night to night: from our first in Gish to our last in Aghori Mhori Mei.”
The Smashing Pumpking will set off their Rats in a Cage Tour from Columbus, Ohio’s Schottenstein Center, then head to the East Coast for stops at Boston’s TD Garden, Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena, Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and Philadelphia’s PPG Paints Arena through Oct. 6. After two shows in Ontario and Quebec, they’ll deliver a series of Midewest dates, including Madison, Wis.’s Kohl Center, St. Paul, Minn.’s Grand Casino Arena and the United Center in Corgan’s home city of Chicago from Oct. 11-14. Corgan, guitarist James Aha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin will tackle the Southeast from Oct. 16-22, including Nashville, Tenn.’s The Truth, then cross through the South Central, Southwest and Mountain regions before closing out the tour with a West Coast sweep, including dates at Portland, Ore.’s Moda Center, Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena, San Joser’s SAP Center, Inglewood, Calif.’s Kia Forum and a finale headlining Huntington Beach, Calif.’s Darker Waves festival.
