Representatives from three of the foremost funk outfits of the 21st century have united to form the new supergroup The Breaks. Featuring the unsurpassed instrumental talents of guitarist Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds), drummer Stanton Moore (Galactic) and organist Robert Walter (The Greyboy Allstars), the trio will let loose their spin on the organ trio tradition and distinctive fusion of funk, jazz and soul on a self-titled debut, set to release via Walter’s Color Red imprint on May 1. To preview their synthesis, the outfit has released the lead single “Hasheesh,” alongside a slate of tour dates.

“Even though this is a new band, there are years of history between us,” Walter shared in a release. “These are two of my favorite musicians and two of my closest friends. I’m also a huge fan of both Eddie and Stanton. It’s so easy and fun to play music with these people. It’s like putting on a pair of well broken-in, comfortable shoes.”

The Breaks’ powers are on full display on “Hasheesh,” a bombastic upbeat funk romp that shows the trio seamlessly trading the lead in a string of grooving, adventurous solos. The artists are backed in this rotation by horn blasts from saxophonist Brad Walker, trumpeter Michael Bradford and trombonist Big Sam Williams, as well as a fevered conga rumble from percussionist Pedro Segundo. From a deep-pocketed and infectious foundation, the trio steadily lets loose towards their wildest improvisatory impulses, foreshadowing more staggering breakdowns on the record to come.

The Breaks will take the stage this weekend for two co-headline shows with George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners at Cervantes’ Other Side in Denver. The trio will return to herald their studio debut with a show at New Orleans’ Tipitina’s on May 2, then jet set to Japan for an appearance at the iconic Fuji Rock Festival on July 26.
