Last night Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country made their way to Louisville, Kentucky for a show at the Mercury Ballroom. Yesterday was also Bob Dylan’s 84th birthday. To mark the occasion, Donato and his three bandmates offered up seven songs in Dylan’s honor.
The show began with three originals tunes. The quartet opened with “Better Deal Blues,” followed by “Along The Trail” which led into “Down Bedford.” The remainder of the first set then featured Dylan covers, starting with “I Shall Be Released,” then “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go,” “Lay, Lady, Lay,” “Country Pie,” “Tonight I’ll be Staying Here With You” and “Tangled Up In Blue.” Donato shared lead vocals during this sequence as Nathan Aronowitz sang “I Shall Be Released,” with Will McGee taking on that role for “Lay, Lady, Lay” and Will Clark assuming the honors during “Tonight I’ll be Staying Here With You.”
The second frame kicked off with “Half Moon Night” which moved into “I Saw The Light” and then a “Half Moon Night” reprise. The set also included versions of “Rose in a Garden,” “Til’ The Daylight” and “Sunshine In The Rain (Strange Presence).” For the encore, Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country then returned to the Dylan catalog with “Quinn The Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn).”
Today the group will appear at Dark Star Jubilee in Thornville, OH.
