Last night, Phoenix and Vampire Weekend crossed paths yet again, this time in the form of a sit-in from VW frontman Ezra Koenig during the French indie quartet’s headline set at Primavera Sound. Adding more heat to the abbreviated day one program for the beloved annual summer kick-off in Barcelona, Koenig joined for two tracks, including the beloved 2009 chart-topper “1901.” This thrilling meet-up marked the third live collaboration between the groups this year, who have been bringing the combined indie powerhouse to stages since early April.

Phoenix amazed with the arrival of Koenig, who is set to deliver a headline performance of his own with Vampire Weekend tonight, May 30. Together, the artists teamed up for a treatment of Phoenix’s fan-favorite 2022 track “Tonight,” which was also staged when Phoenix’s Thomas Mars joined Vampire Weekend for its special eclipse-coordinated Austin tour kickoff on April 8. Koenig was further rehearsed with the track when he joined Phoenix’s performance at Just Like Heaven Festival on May 18, 2024. The group moved on to the unforgettable “1901,” which saw Koenig deliver some next-level guitar work; the artist remained onstage for the 2022 Alpha Zulu standout “Identical (Reprise)” as Mars dived into the crowd.
