Sam Grisman Project have announced a thrilling double-bill performance at Grundy, Tenn.’s The Caverns with the legendary Peter Rowan. Booked for June 30, this show will culminate by bringing the acts together to assume the mantle of Rowan’s iconic ‘70s bluegrass ensemble Old & In the Way, which also featured Jerry Garcia and Grisman’s father, David “Dawg” Grisman.
In this special engagement, Sam Grisman Project will perform a first set in the sonorous natural wonder with fiddle accompaniment from string virtuoso Alex Hargreaves. In the second set, Rowan will lead the band for a selection of originals from each and classic entries from Old & In the Way. Though the short-lived band has released six records since its 1973 heyday, nearly the entirety of Old & In the Way’s discography can be traced to live collaborations around San Francisco from that single prolific year. Since then, the band’s innovative approach to Americana standards has inspired countless fans to carry forth its torch in the continuous renewal and revitalization of bluegrass.
Sam Grisman Project broke the news of this exciting team-up in a post to the band’s social channels, accompanied by an official poster that cutely renders the group with Rowan in the style of Old & In the Way’s 1975 self-titled debut album cover. “We’re honored and most excited to announce a special collaborative evening of music in the magical Cumberland Caverns with our dear friend and hero,” Grisman shared. “I have know[n] Pete since i was [a] baby, and his songs and singing have been a part of the musical fabric of our lives for as long as we can remember. We can’t wait to put our heads together to create a memorable evening of music for y’all!”
