On Saturday, Jan. 27, Dark Star Orchestra was joined by a pair of unannounced guests at their concert at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. During the second set staple, “Drums,” the backbeats for the Grateful Dead cover band Dino English and Rob Koritz were joined by actor Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick, Fantastic Four) and virtuoso jazz and fusion drummer Chad Wackerman.

As Kortiz told Relix,  “First of all, on Miles Teller, being from the movie Whiplash, that’s where he played a drummer. Turns out he’s a deadhead and has seen us many times. He reached out that he was coming to the show. We invited him backstage asked him if he wanted to play, he said yes. Dino has taken lessons from Chad Wackerman from time to time, and they have struck up a relationship. That was actually the second time he has sat it with us.”

Then, English added, “Throw in that Chad is my drum teacher …He has been on and off since 2009. I just had a lesson with him yesterday!”

After Dark Star Orchestra’s Los Angeles stand, the band will resume their Winter Tour this evening, Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, Calif., followed by a sold-out night at The Guild Theatre in Menlo Park, Calif., and Thursday night’s San Francisco appearance at The Warfield.

Dark Star Orchestra will close out their remaining Golden State concerts before taking their Winter Tour through the Pacific Northwest, with gigs slated for Oregon and Washington State. The group also shared that they will perform their first-ever concerts in the Hawaiian islands on April 4 and 5, with shows slated for Honolulu.
