On Saturday, Nov. 11, boygenius made their Saturday Night Live debut. Timothée Chalamet hosted the late-night program, which later featured the favored trio Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus as musical guests. During their appearance the band performed “Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist.” Watch below.
After an introduction from the night’s host, lights illuminated the small studio stage, spotlighting the band, who took the opportunity to nod to ensembles past, donning matching black suits and ties, unmistakably drawing a visual comparison to The Beatles’ 1964 The Ed Sullivan Show debut. Notably, the trio pulled a similar move on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine earlier this year, paying homage to Nirvana.
The staggering visual appeal gave way to “Not Strong Enough” from the group’s 2023 set, The Record. Their song choice allowed each leading ladies to flex their vocal strength, individually (and collectively) delivering lines on the alt-rock stinger. Following a similar trend, boygenius tapped into their latest release, performing a high-powered rendition of “Satanist,” complete with a jammed-out midsection.
While the first-time appearance status encompassed the band’s shared history, Saturday’s stand served as a return for Bridgers, who notably smashed her guitar on stage in 2021 during her initial 2021 slot as the musical guest, performing “I Know The End” from her second solo set, Punisher.
Just before boygenius’ Saturday Night Live performance, they received six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Alternative Album for The Record. They also received nods for Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance plus Best Rock Song for “Not Strong Enough,” as well as Best Alternative Performance on “Cool About It.”
