Former Senior Photographer for Relix magazine and Chief Package Designer for Grateful Dead Productions Bob Minkin has launched a Kickstarter Campaign for his latest hardcover large format coffee table book, Just Phil. The collection marks Minkin’s fifth coffee table book and third that focuses on an individual member of the Grateful Dead following Just Jerry (2019) and Just Bobby (2022).
Just Phil contains over 200 pages and hundreds of images–many previously unpublished–of bassist Phil Lesh. According to the Kickstarter’s mission statement, Minkin explored every photograph he ever took of Lesh, captured over five decades, for only the collection. The photos see Lesh during his time with the Grateful Dead, Furthur, Phil Lesh & Friends, the Terrapin Crossroads years and more.
The images include peak moments from performances at iconic venues, including Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Capitol Theatre, Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, Sweetwater Music Hall and more. Just Phil will also feature intimate behind-the-scenes photos and anecdotes by people close to Lesh and his music.
“This project is borne out of love for Phil and The Dead, respect for the passion and creativity of the music, and for the significance that the Grateful Dead has brought to our lives,” Minkin wrote. “Created by a Dead Head for Dead Heads, it’s my desire to have our community be a part of this book’s creation.”
Just Phil will be available in two editions: a signature edition and a deluxe collector’s edition, which will be signed and numbered. The deluxe collector’s edition will only see 150 copies and will include a signed and numbered 8.5″ x 11″ of “Phil at Oakland Coliseum—
1992” printed on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Paper.
