Phish’s three-night run at Chicago’s United Center continued last night. The high-energy Saturday performance opened with “Runaway Jim” and then featured a few shorter but still well-played cuts, including “Martian Monster,” “Sample in a Jar,” “Weigh” and Taj Mahal’s “Corinna,” which seemed to fit in with Chicago’s rich blues history.
The latter two tunes were the night’s biggest bust outs, having been on the shelf since August 31, 2021 and October 15, 2021, respectively.” A run from “Tube” into “46 Days” was the evening’s first segue and then Phish closed their set with “NICU,” “Most Events Aren’t Planned,” “Cavern” and “More.” “Most Events Aren’t Planned,” which comes from Page McConnell’s Vida Blue project, held some extra significance since the keyboardist traveled to New Orleans before Phish’s show in Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday to participate in a second line honoring that trio’s drummer, Russell Batiste Jr., who recently passed away. (Vida Blue bassist Oteil Burbridge attended the second line too.)
The quartet’s second set kicked off with an extended, unfinished “Chalk Dust Torture” that moved into the group’s new jam vehicle “Oblivion and” “Split Open and Melt.” Then, another extended segue that ran from The Siket Disco chestnut “What’s the Use?” into “Everything’s Right” and Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter” was another improvisational highlight. “Fluffhead” closed the second set, before Phish encored with “A Life Beyond The Dream” and “Character Zero.”
Phish will close their fall tour in Chicago tonight.
