Last night, Tool brought the driving and heavy sound of their fall tour to the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, where incendiary guitarist Billy Strings made a surprise appearance early in the set. Speculation floated around after Strings shared photos with Tool drummer Danny Carey on social media.

Strings, known for his distinct jamgrass style and a headbanging love for metal, joined the stage with an electric guitar as Tool rounded out the title track of their latest album, “Fear Inoculum,” which served as the opener of their 10-track set. The Michigan native then handled the complex arrangements found on Tool’s song “Jambi,” released on their 2007 LP 10,000 Days.

Following the fretboard firework starter’s addition, Tool continued to play songs from their latest LP along with choice cuts from 10,000 Days. The set was closed with “Forty Six & 2,” before Carey showed off his unmatching percussive skills during a drum solo for the encore, which saw “Culling Voices” and “Invincible.”

Strings will end the first leg of his fall tour this weekend in Independence, Mo., before heading overseas in November before returning to his home state for a Halloween performance. Tool will perform again tonight in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
