Micky Dolenz, the only surviving member of The Monkees, has announced a new EP of R.E.M. covers, fittingly titled Dolenz Sings R.E.M., due out November 3. As a preview of the impending set, the musician has shared his take on the Out of Time chart-topper and fan favorite, “Shiny Happy People.”

The EP is slated to feature four classic songs from R.E.M.’s beloved music catalog, including “Shiny Happy People.” Dolenz Sings R.E.M. also features “Radio Free Europe,” ‘Man on the Moon,” and “Leaving New York.” The collection of cover material will be released via 7A Records and will be available in yellow vinyl.

News of the project was initially shared via an interview with Rolling Stone, in which Dolenz said that the EP was the result of conversations with 7A Records co-owner Glenn Gretlund, “I was talking to Glenn about what to do next,” he explained.

“The band R.E.M. came up. I went, ‘Wow, that’s very cool.’ I’m a big fan… And I’ve heard through the grapevine that the band were fans of The Monkees. I found that incredibly flattering,” offered Dolenz, who notably released a cover album of Carole King material in 2010 and a tribute to his late bandmate, Michael Nesmith, in 2021.

In support of the set, Dolenz added, “Once again, this EP reaffirms my long-held conviction that a solid recording always begins with solid material.” He continued, “You don’t get much more solid than R.E.M. What a joy to sing these classics and honor a team of outstanding writers.”
