Over the weekend, on Aug. 25 and 26, My Morning Jacket shook the grand red sandstone outcrops of Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo. The first evening served as a celebration of the 20th-anniversary of the band’s album It Still Moves, which saw several bust-outs and assistance from frontman Jim James’ bandmate in Monsters of Folk, M. Ward. M. Ward also bolstered the second evening, along with Nathaniel Rateliff, who joined for a thunderous cover of Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright?”. The second night also saw several other highlights, including the band’s debut cover of Cat Stevens’ “The Wind” and an encore that included the four parts of “Cobra.”

My Morning Jacket started the first evening with a pairing of “Mahgeetah” with “Dancefloors.” M. Ward then joined for a shimmering “Golden.” The set rolled on with fluid transitions from favorite to favorite, including “One Big Holiday,” “I Will Sing You Songs,” and more. The set was rounded out with “Just One Thing” for the first time since 2018, followed by “Steam Engine” with M. Ward” followed by “One in the Same,” which has also not been performed since 2018.

The show kept fans wanting more, and the encore provided just that with nine incredible songs. The run began with a triumphant “Victory Dance” and included a cascade of sound in the form of “Slow Slow Tune” > “Smokin’ From Shootin'” > “Gideon” before My Morning Jacket closed with their iconic song “Wordless Chorus.”

The next evening captured the same lightning-in-a-bottle energy opening with “Anytime.” Each tune was dished out with mindful expertise and fashioned with unmistakable vocals from James. Highlights included the return of M. Ward during “At Dawn,” the aforementioned “The Wind,” which followed “Butch Cassidy,” and Rateliff’s additions to “Feelin’ Alright?” which embodied the soul of Joe Cocker.

The evening’s encore included “Cobra,” which was divided by songs like “Highly Suspicious,” “Off the Record” with M. Ward, “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2,” and trailed by “Holdin On to Black Metal,” and “Love Love Love.”
