Sufjan Stevens has announced the impending release of a new LP, dubbed Javelin, due on October 6, 2023. As a preview of what’s to come, the singer-songwriter has shared the first single, “So You Are Tired.” The forthcoming album serves as the third installment of solo material since 2020’s The Ascension and 2015’s Carrie & Lowell.
Javelin presents like a big team production, although it is made up of material from a close-knit circle of friends, such as adrienne maree brown, Hannah Cohen, Pauline Delassus, Megan Lui, and Nedelle Torrisi, who provide harmonies on many songs. The National’s Bryce Dessner also assists with acoustic and electric guitar on Shit Talk.”
In addition, the meticulously crafted album boasts a borrowed tune from Neil Young. “There’s A World,” a song that initially appeared on the 1972 favorite Harvest, also serves as the LP’s final number. Moreover, today’s single, “So You Are Tired,” starts with a mellow introduction comprised of piano, built up with layers of guitar and percussion to generate a lush and melancholic atmosphere.
The impending set also features a 48-page book of art and essays created by Stevens, which includes a series of collages, cut-up catalog fantasies, puff-paint word clouds, and iterative color fields. The 10 short essays offer little glimpses into the loves and losses that have shaped him and, in turn, these songs.
