Today, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead announced that their Newport Jazz Festival set, slated to take place this Friday, August 4, at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, R.I., will no longer include Kamasi Washington but will feature Branford Marsalis instead.

News of the lineup shift was announced via social media in a post shared on Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s official account. The band wrote: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, @kamasiwashington will not be performing his planned sets at the @newportjazzfest on Friday. Fortunately, our friend and certified legend, the one and only @branfordmarsalis, will be joining the celebration with his own set, as well as joining JRAD for a closing set that is sure to be one for the ages.”

Notable, Marsalis has shared special moments performing alongside the Grateful Dead throughout the ‘90s. Collaborative times between the band and legendary jazz saxophonist were captured on a number of live releases, including Without A Net, Spring 1990, Infrared Roses and Wake Up to Find Out. In the years which followed Garcia’s 1995 passing, Marsalis continued to work with members of the original ensemble, such as The Dead’s April 28 and 29,  2009 shows at IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J., and during Dead & Company’s 2018 set at LOCKN’.
