Three-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Grace Potter has delivered two new tracks off her impending LP, Mother Road, due out on Aug. 18 via Fantasy Records. Each number reveals one of the many characters conceived by the musicians, including the 20-year-old gleeful hitchhiker on “Ready Set Go” and a lawless superhero on the spaghetti-western “Lady Vagabond.”
The forthcoming collection was produced by Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Nickel Creek) and recorded at RCA’s famed Studio A in Nashville, Tenn., and Topangadise in Topanga, Calif. The project sees Potter joined by contributors, including guitarist Nick Bockrath, bassist Tim Deaux, drummer Matt Musty, pedal steel guitarist Dan Kalisher, and keyboardist Benmont Tench.
Commenting on today’s delivery via a press release, Potter offered: “‘Ready Set Go’ is one of the very first songs I wrote for Mother Road. I’d been driving solo for about a week and I must’ve been desperate for some company because any time I stopped, I got this bizarre urge to jump in every car, truck, train or bus I saw drive by! While I didn’t indulge that highly questionable and risky idea in reality, I did explore it through song…and my imaginary co-pilots took me down some very unexpected roads.”
She also offered words about the secondary single, “Lady Vagabond,” saying, “On the other hand, along the many stops on Mother Road, ‘Lady Vagabond’ is, without a doubt, the steepest exit ramp to another dimension from which you cannot return.”
Potter’s new album will arrive after 2019’s two-time Grammy-nominated LP, Daylight. Mother Road features 10 tracks, including a fiery initial single, “Ready Set Go,” comprised of stinging slide guitar, “Little Hitchhiker,” a stunning detailed story-song co-written by superstar songwriter Natalie Hemby, in addition to the album’s theatrical finale, “All My Ghost.”
In addition to the impending LP release, Potter will support the set on the road this fall, with plans to embark on a tour beginning on Sept. 7 in Maine. The expansive run will take the Vermont-born songwriter across the East Coast and Midwest. Read more.
