Guitarist Eric Krasno and producer/multi-instrumentalist Otis McDonald have teamed up to deliver a captivating rendition of the Grateful Dead classic “Sugar Magnolia.” On the cover duo, breathe life into the 1970 gem–penned by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter–with a vintage soul-funk flair on a video recorded back in 2020.

Krasno revealed that the idea for the cover emerged during the pandemic when he was asked to create a fresh version of “Sugar Magnolia” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s iconic album, American Beauty. Having collaborated with McDonald on his solo and King Canyon projects, the pair, who share past experiences touring with Grateful Dead members (Krasno with Phil & Friends and Otis with the Mickey Hart Band), found it fitting to join forces and craft a funky tribute to the classic tune.

Although the cover was originally recorded three years ago–the video is very reminiscent of the pandemic–its release comes at an opportune moment, coinciding with Krasno’s upcoming weekend tour in the Northeast alongside Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh.

The three-night run of Phil & Friends shows will feature Phil Lesh and Eric Krasno alongside Jason Crosby, James Casey, Jennifer Hartswick, Grahame Lesh, and John Molo. The performances are set for July 21 at Boston’s Leader Bank Pavilion, followed by appearances at Patchogue, N.Y.’s Great South Bay Music Festival on July 22 and New Haven, Conn.’s Westville Music Bowl on July 23.
