Dave Matthews sat in with Dead & Company at Boulder, CO’s Folsom Field last night, the final show the Grateful Dead offshoot’s three-night run at the stadium. At the end of Dead & Company’s second set, Matthews emerged for a take on Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” a tune both Dave Matthews Band and the Dead have made their own, and a set-closing version of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away.” Then, the DMB frontman returned during the night’s encore for two classic-rock covers Dead & Company play, Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and The Band’s “The Weight.”

Before Matthews’ appearance, the show had already made some headlines when weather caused a weather delay at the end of the first set. A night early, drummer Mickey Hart also surprised fans by singing a verse of “Fire on the Mountain” during Dead & Company’s second Boulder show.

Dave Matthews Band famously opened for the Grateful Dead in Las Vegas in 1995 and Matthews and Weir have collaborated a handful of times over the year. Most recently, they took part in a private birthday party at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl in January where they collaborated on “The Maker,” “All Along the Watchtower,” “La Grange,” “No Woman, No Cry,””Gloria” and “Not Fade Away.” Warren Haynes, Questlove, Blues Traveler and Karl Denson also took part in various parts of the jam. Mayer has his own history with Matthews and the two singer/guitarists shared the stage three times in 2007.

Dave Matthews Band will perform in Chicago on Friday while Dead & Company will appear in George, WA.
