Last night, Dopapod turned up at the Charleston Pour House. The Holy City concert commenced with a first frame stacked with originals and a thoughtfully placed cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Crazy Fingers,” performed in the style of Jazz Is Dead, a band who were also in Charleston, S.C., performing across town at The Charleston Music Hall. The night’s second half saw the billed band bring out Doom Flamingo’s Ross Bogan and Thomas Kenney, who assisted on the evening rendition of “Velcro.”
Sunday’s set heated up with 2012 released “Blast,” followed by “Trapper Keeper” and “PLSS.” The aforementioned number merged into the night’s take on “Crazy Fingers,” which ran into the Redivider track “Braindead.” The ensemble, which includes Eli Winderman (keys), Rob Compa (guitar), Chuck Jones (bass), and Neal Evans (drums), added in “Running” before some on-stage commentary and first frame ender, “Give It a Name.”
After a break from the stage, Dopapod returned and cut into the night’s second half with accompaniment from Bogan and Kenney, who helped their hosts deliver the 2022 cut, “Velcro.” During the set’s first song, keyboardist Bogan traded his sedentary instrumental setup for the keytar. At the same time, Kenney picked the guitar, helping establish a groove on the choice number. Jones stopped the group mid-jam for an impromptu keyboard/guitar duel, which set up Dopapod for some ensuing crowd-prompted instrumental spontaneity.
Following the billed performer’s live ad-lib, they tacked on “Man Or Machine,” which busted over into “Picture In Picture,” an unfinished “Mucho,” and eventually a return to “Picture In Picture” prior to the final song of the second set, “Bubble Brain.” During Dopapod’s encore, they performed another improv that eventually emerged as “Wheezy.” For the night’s final song, the band concluded their stand in Charleston, S.C., with the 2014 released “FABA.”
After Dopapod’s Sunday night gig, they will take a night off the road before performing on Tuesday, May 16, at the Saturn in Birmingham, Ala. Catch Bogan and Kenney alongside their Doom Flamingo collaborators at several festival appearances this summer; view touring information here.
