This weekend, April 6 through April 8, Guster played a tight run of tour dates with support from bassist and singer Karina Rykman. On Thursday, the musicians closed out a two-night stand at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, N.J. On Saturday night, they headed down to Philadelphia for an appearance at The Fillmore, before dishing a final set at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y.
On Thursday, the Boston-based rockers delivered a nostalgic setlist, with Rykman sitting in for a series of tunes at the end of the night. Guster started things off with the title track from their 1999 release What You Wish For. They kept the throwback songs coming with “Architects and Engineers,” “Red Oyster Cult,” “Ramona,” “One Man Wrecking Machine,” “Manifest Destiny,” “I Hope Tomorrow Is Like Today,” “All The Way Up To Heaven” and “Satellite.” They followed up with some newer material, including 2015’s “Doin’ It By Myself” and 2019’s “Look Alive,” before returning to 2003’s Keep It Together for fan-favorite “Come Downstairs And Say Hello.” Then, Guster tackled “Do You Love Me,” “Never Coming Down,” “When You Go Quiet,” and added their own spin to Bon Jovi’s 1986 hit with “Mexican Restaurant Penis TV Improv Jam to Bon Jovi’s Livin On A Prayer.” Finally, the rockers dished out staples “Airport Song,” and “Happier,” before inviting Rykman back onstage.
Rykam accompanied Guster on their 2019 release “Hard Times,” which was followed by a cover of The Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer.” Then, the ensemble served up a set-closing rendition of Deee-Lite’s “Groove Is In The Heart.” Guster returned to the stage for two rounds of encores, finishing off the night with “Mona Lisa,” “Bury Me,” “Terrified” and “Hang On.”
Guster kept the energy high on Friday night, sprinkling several fan-favorites from the night before into the setlist. They opened the show with “Careful” which was trailed by “Barrel Of A Gun.” Additional tracks on the roster included “ Long Night,” “The Captain,” “Don’t Go” “Lightning Rod,” “Center Of Attention,” “Hercules,” Bad Bad World,” Sharp Provolone Improv,” Terrified,” “Two Points For Honesty,” and “Amsterdam.” Notably, during the show the rockers busted out their 1994 release “Happy Frappy” for the first time since 2019. Guster closed out the evening with a four-track encore, including “Ruby Falls” “Satellite,” “This Could All Be Yours,” and a cover of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart.”
For Saturday night’s performance at The Capitol Theatre, Guster once again kicked things off with “What You Wish For” before diving into every era of their expansive live catalog. The group brought back a handful of tunes from Friday and Saturday’s setlists, as well as 2006’s “The Captain,” 2010’s “Stay With Me Jesus,” and their 2019 release “Stay With Me Mister Sun.” Additional tracks on the setlist included “Demons,” “Do You Love Me,” Kid Dreams,” “What You Call Love” and “Either Way.” Guster returned to the stage for another lengthy, two-part encore, beginning with a second take on “Happy Frappy,” which was followed by “One Man Wrecking Machine,” and “Barrel Of A Gun.” They finished things off with an acoustic, off-mic rendition of “Jesus On The Radio.”
After this weekend’s string of performances, Guster will take a short break before returning to the road on April 14 for three nights at the High Water Festival in Charleston, S.C. The musicians are slated for several additional festival appearances this summer, as well as a two-night stand at Symphony Hall in Boston on June 6 and 7.
