Iconic newgrass Colorado-based acoustic jamband Leftover Salmon have been torchbearers for a new generation of contemporary stars since they took on the flame from New Grass Revival and The Seldom Scene and today announced they have a new LP titled Grass Roots on the horizon. The project will look back on the festival campground origins of their sound and draw from the discographies that united The Salmon Heads and The Left Hand String Band when they first jammed at a Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
Grass Roots will showcase all the firepower they’ve amassed and mastered to interpret the music that inspired them from across genres, with sped-up, explorative renditions of songs penned by the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and David Bromberg. The album will also feature contemporary icons Billy Strings, Oliver Wood and Darol Anger, not to mention new member Jay Starling on lap steel, keys and resonator guitar.
In celebration of the announcement of the project, Leftover Salmon released an up-tempo bluegrass rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate” that sees co-founder Vince Herman on lead vocals. The track shows each of the member’s skills, while Herman projects Dylan’s lyrics with his iconic guttural vocals.
