Jeff Coffin has announced that he will release his next album, entitled Look For Water, on May 5. The impending drop will arrive after Coffin’s 2022 project Between Dreaming and Joy, which earned the saxophonist a Grammy nomination.

While his 2022 work demonstrated his strength as an ensemble composer, the upcoming studio album aims to showcase a new side of Coffin’s musicianship. Look For Water will offer paired-down recordings, emphasizing the individual instrumental components within every track. On the album, Coffin will be joined by drummer Johnny Vidacovich, bassist James Singleton, tenor saxophonist Tony Dagradi and cellist Helen Gillet.

The aforementioned group of musicians came together in early 2021, after Coffin and Gillet shared the stage at New Orlean’s Broadside Theater. After the two connected and discussed plans for a new project, Coffin reached out to Vidacovich to join in on the guitar. Finally, he secured Vidocovich’s Astral Project bandmates as additional collaborators.

Immediately after the ensemble was established, they began recording. Coffin and company spent only three hours in the studio, piecing together what he describes as a “love letter to New Orleans.” The complete project features nine unique tracks, with each song paying homage to Coffin’s lived experiences in The Crescent City.

Coffin commented on the recording process for Look For Water in a press release. He remarked, “It felt like the tunes were a new wave of music rising up like the dawn of a new day. Bright, colorful, hopeful, expanding, full of wonder, and I really love the way this project turned out. Everyone is magical.”

The album is set for release through Coffin’s own label, Ear Up Records. Scroll to view the Look For Water tracking list below.
