On Saturday, Feb. 25, Greensky Bluegrass closed out the first leg of dates on their 2023 tour at the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City, Mo. The quintet delivered a dynamic set with Donato’s Cosmic Country support, peppering in traditional bluegrass tunes with newer original material. One of the later tracks in the show was particularly notable: the jamgrass ensemble surprised fans with a stripped-down cover of Harry Styles’ “As It Was,” from the British pop-sensation’s third studio album Harry’s House.
Greensky Bluegrass transitioned seamlessly from the improvisational track “Tarpology” into the Styles-penned number which ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 100 charts for 14 weeks straight this summer. Paul Hoffman took the lead on vocals, and the rest of the group added their spin on strings. After a round of audience applause, the band finished the concert’s second frame with “Living Over,” an original piece from 2016’s Shouted, Written Down & Quoted.
This is not the first time the ensemble has transcended genre with their live covers; in the past, Greensky Bluegrass has tackled numbers from Black Sabbath to Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and Justin Timberlake. Scroll down to view Greensky Bluegrass’ full rendition of “As It Was.”
