Last Thursday, Jan. 26, Umphrey’s McGee brought their current tour to The Hoosier State, where they performed a one-night stand at Clyde Theatre in Fort Wayne, Ind. The show saw an opening set by guests on the road, Doom Flamingo, whose members later joined the ensemble–Ryan Stasik, Kris Meyers, Andu Farag, Joel Cummins, Jake Cinniger and Brendan Bayliss–on stage during follow-up gigs in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Detroit.
Before affiliates of Doom Flamingo joined their hosts during their main set, a choice initiated during their Great Lake State venture, Umphrey’s McGee, delivered a memorable night of music in their home state of Indiana. The Clyde Theatre performance featured a slew of originals, including a bust out of “Bus Call,” which was last played on April 2, 2011, during a show at Park West in Chicago. The appearance of the number on the night’s setlist ended a 1,029 concert lapse since they last performed the tune.
Continuing their 25th-anniversary trek, Umphrey’s McGee followed up the next night, Friday, Jan. 27, with a stand at GLC Live at 20 Monroe in Grand Rapids, Mich. After warming up the audience, member of Doom Flamingo, Mike Quinn, arrived on stage just in time for the final song of UM’s first frame, and added sax to “Love Booth.” Then, during the night’s second set, Umphrey’s McGee welcomed Ross Bogan on keys during the night’s rendition of “Cemetery Walk II.”
On Saturday, Jan. 28, Umphrey’s McGee once again brought out members of Doom Flamingo, this time during their performance at The Fillmore in Detroit. During the tail end of the night’s first set, the band invited Quinn to help out on “Made to Measure,” a song that initially appeared on UM’s 2009 LP, Mantis. Their final guest, Kanika Moore, arrived during the show’s second half and added vocals on the evening’s cover of the Radiohead original “Creep.”
The band continued their tour last night, performing a gig at the House of Blues in Cleveland. Next, Umphrey’s McGee will take a few nights off the road before returning to the stage on Feb. 2, when they are billed to play at The Sylvee in Madison, Wis.
