Over the weekend, the Disco Biscuits stopped by The Eastern in Atlanta, Ga., for two nights of jamtronica. The beloved ensemble opened both evenings at the state-of-the-art venue in the Dairies complex in the Reynoldstown neighborhood with songs they’ve yet to play in 2022: “Therapy” on Nov. 18 and “Bazaar Escape” on Nov. 19.
On Friday, following “Therapy,” the group played non-stop–except for a set break and encore– moving fluidly into an inverted rendition of “Astronaut” and then “Running Into the Night” along with “Who’s in Charge” before bookending the frame by returning to “Therapy.” The second set kicked off with “7-11” and then popped off with “Why We Dance” > “Tourists (Rocket Ship)” > “Air Song.” The music then melded into an inverted rendition of “Svenghali” and closed with “Caterpillar.” They then encored with “The Wormhole” to close the night.
Saturday’s rendition of “Bazaar Escape” was last heard on March 25, 2021, in Orlando, Fla., and the Disco Biscuits’ end-of-the-year addition was a welcomed and polished rendition. Like the previous evening, the show was a non-stop jam and moved into “To Be Continued,” which was played in full for the first time and was based in part on “Vassillios” > “Spaga” from April 11, 2008. From there, they moved into an inverted take on “Above The Waves” before the set was fleshed out into the penultimate “Shocked” before set closer “Spacebirdmatingcall.”
The second set began with a nod to New York with “Times Square,” which was followed by “Another Plan of Attack,” “The Great Abyss,” and “Orc Theme.” Next came an inverted version of “Twisted in the Road” before they again decided to bookend the frame, this time returning to “Another Plan of Attack.” To close the evening, the Disco Biscuits encored with “Mulberry’s Dream.”
