Last Night, Oct. 7, Gov’t Mule performed at The Terrapin Beer Company in Athens, Ga. The performance saw the Southern rock jamband led by Warren Haynes perform perfectly in their element, and the show was propelled by American guitarist Mike Campbell.
Gov’t Mule kicked off their ever-cover heavy show with the traditional “Railroad Boy” before moving into a run of originals, including “Thorazine Shuffle,” “Banks of the Deep End,” “Larger Than Life,” “Temporary Saint,” and “Time to Confess.” With the blues rock flowing, Campbell sauntered on stage to cover Peter Green’s “Black Magic Woman” along with “Working Class Hero” by the late John Lennon.
After Campbell stepped off the stage, the single set performance continued with a pairing of covers from Hanyes’ time with The Allman Brothers Band: “Kind of Bird” and “Soulshine.” Next came “Going Out West” and a nod to Athens, “Gonna Send You Back to Georgia (A City Slick)” by Timmy Shaw. They then played “Statesboro Blues by Blind Willie McTell before moving back into “Gonna Send You Back To Georgia” to close the set.
After much applause and a short break, the blues heavies returned for their encore, which was comprised of Tom Waits’ seminal song “Make It Rain” followed by Howiln’ Wolf’s equally impactful “I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline).” See the full setlist below.
