Last night Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros kicked off their fall tour at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Conn. The ensemble comprised of Bobby Weir, Jay Lane, Jeff Chimenti, and Don Was, were joined by The Wolfpack and special guest Barry Sless and performed tracks expansive Grateful Dead catalog, Weir’s solo album and busted out “Walkin Blues” for the first time since 2018.
The Grateful Dead guitarist and his group of longtime bandmates opened the set with “Playing in the Band” while melded into their first cover of the evening, The King of the Delta Blues, Robert Johnson’s “Walkin’ Blues,” marking the first time the seminal blues track has been played by Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros in five years. Next came “Hell in a Bucket,” followed by a Weir original “Black-Throated Wind.” The howling ensemble then played Bob Dylan’s “Queen Jane Approximately,” then “My Brother Esau,” before closing the frame with a pairing of “Dark Star” with “Jack Straw.”
Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros kicked off the second set with “Only a River,” then a cover of John Phillips’ “Me and My Uncle.” Next came a rendition of Jerry Garcia’s ” Bird Song” and a jam of “Estimated Prophet” > “Eyes of the World” > a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” The band continued with a run of Grateful Dead staples moving from “Eyes of the World” to “Black Peter” to “Terrapin Station Suite,” and finally set closer, “Touch of Grey.”
Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros will continue their fall tour with a performance at the Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Conn. Stream the concert via FANS.live here.
