Neil Young surprised Jack White and Rick Rubin in the midst of their interview on the latest episode of Rubin’s podcast, Broken Record – which was released on Sept. 20.

White and Rubin were deep into an hour-and-a-half long conversation at Rubin’s Shangri-la Studio when Young entered the room, much to White’s surprise. Young revealed he’d been working on recording new music, telling White that the process had been “going great.”

As the three artists dove deep into conversation, the topic of how to maintain a long-term musical career came up. White praised Young’s longevity, referencing it as a source of inspiration for his career. “It’s a nice position to be in to have Bob [Dylan], and Neil [Young], and Tom [Waits] who have proven these things can continue,” White stated.

The ever-prolific Young, who recorded his 2016 album Peace Trail at Shangri-La, provided some details on the tracks he’d been working on with Rubin. According to Young, the new music will feature “unheard of combinations of instruments.”

“It was a fun experience,” Ruben said of the recent sessions with Young. “And certainly, for me, different than anything I’ve ever been involved in.”

In other segments of the interview, White discussed his early days in the Detroit garage-rock scene, his current world tour in support of the two records he released this year, his work with his record label Third Man Records, and much more. White was recently featured on the cover of the May/June issue of Relix. Read cover story of the issue on the current world of Jack White can be found here.
