Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters sat down with CNN‘s Michael Smerconish to talk about his ongoing This Is Not a Drill Tour which recently garnered attention after fans showed an introductory message that warns attendees that “If you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd, but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people, you might do well to fuck off to the bar right now.” Waters’ tour includes references to the police killing Black men, abortion and semi-automatic weapons.

Rogers guitarist Johnathan Wilson addressed the nature of the tour, sharing with CNN that “Even the Stones or members of the Beatles, it’s more of a trip down memory lane than it is a current [show]. The activism that’s sort of the key to the whole thing.”

At the start of the interview, Smerconish asked Waters why he recently publically labeled President Joe Biden a “war criminal.” To which Waters responded, “Well, he’s fueling the war in the Ukraine. That is a huge crime. Why won’t the United States of America encourage [Volodymyr] Zelensky to negotiate, obviating the need for this horrific, horrendous war?”

Waters went on to say, “[the] war is basically about the action and reaction of NATO pushing right up to the Russian border, which they promised they wouldn’t do when [Mikhail] Gorbachev negotiated the withdrawal of the USSR from the whole of Eastern Europe.”

When Smerconish argued that the United States has the role of liberator, the English musician argued that the U.S. would never have gotten into World War II had it not been for Pearl Harbor and that the Russians had already won the war by then, stating, “23 million Russians died, protecting you and me from the Nazi menace. He then suggested that Smerconish “go away and read a bit more, and try to figure out what the US would do if the Chinese were putting nuclear-armed missiles into Mexico and Canada.”

On the topic of China, Smerconish quipped that the Chinese are too busy to place nuclear missiles anywhere as they’re “too busy encircling Taiwan,” as they speak. Waters then firmly stated that Taiwan is a part of China and has been accepted by the international community since 1948, again saying that the CNN interviewer should read more and that he is believing his own propaganda. He furthered his defense of China, saying that “The Chinese didn’t invade Iraq and kill a million people in 2013,” then asked, “Who have the Chinese invaded and slaughtered?” The American reporter swiftly said, “Their own,” reminding Waters of the Uyghurs and Muslim minorities that have been placed under forced labor and forced sterilization and placed in “re-education camps” in Xinjiang.

Waters responded saying, “Bullocks! That’s absolute nonsense! Absolute nonsense!” despite the overwhelming amount of evidence available proving otherwise.
