On Sunday night, Tyler Childers closed out DelFest in Cumberland, Md., by welcoming the festival hosts, The Travelin’ McCourys, to sit in on a cover of Bobby Weir’s seminal Ace track, turned Grateful Dead classic, “Greatest Story Ever Told.”
Last month, during Weir’s two-night stand on April 2 and 3 at Radio City Music Hall in New York, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of his debut solo studio album, Ace, Childers sat in for the number which was performed on both nights.
Whereas Childers’ Radio City delivery held a certain amount of rock-fueled power, his performance of the tune on Sunday night pulled from his Kentucky roots by infusing the Hunter/ Weir penned lyrics with a healthy dose of bluegrass melody.
Childers’ pipes were perfectly suited for the tune, which carried a high energy delivery through to the song’s last line: “You know the one thing we need is a left-hand monkey wrench.” Prior to the final lyrics, the band let the music carry them; they unleashed a quick jam before finishing off the performance with a joint bow.
