Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros kicked off their two-night run at Radio City Music Hall in celebration of the 50th-anniversary of Weir’s seminal debut LP, Ace. The evening featured guest sit-ins by Tyler Childers, Brittney Spencer, and Ron Carter and a bust out of “Walk in the Sunshine,” last performed on Jan. 24, 2010.

The show began with a solo acoustic cover of Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece.” Jay Lane, Jeff Chimenti, Barry Sless, and Don Was took the stage and assisted Weir on a rousing “Me and My Uncle.” Followed by a soulful and deep rendition of Jerry Garcia’s “Loser.”

Childers joined the band and applied his phenomenal vocals to the first song of the evening to be played off Ace, “Greatest Story Ever Told.” The band followed up with another tune off the LP, “Black-Throated Wind.” Sless’ pedal steel guitar added depth that evoked a profound emotional reaction from the crowd, with Weir’s lyrics “‘Cause you’ve done better by me/ Than I’ve done by you,” echoing throughout the theatre.

Spencer took the stage and assisted with bust out, “Walk in the Sunshine” Weir and company followed with “Playing in the Band” before Spencer joined again and offered her robust and well-greased vocals to the break-up epic, “Looks Like Rain.” The band then broke into a segue selection of songs, beginning with a fitting “One More Saturday Night” into “Mexicali Blues” and followed by set ender, “Cassidy.”

The second set got underway with a take on Hank Williams and His Drifting Cowboy’s “You Win Again,” once more, Childers joined the band. Weir then played a song off the 1973 LP, Wake of The Flood, “Weather Report Suite.” The latter segued into a funky rendition of “Shakedown Street.” The ensemble then played “Dark Star” with Carter, who sat in for Was on bass. The tune featured a tease of “Wharf Rat” before they broke into “Eyes of the World.”

Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” was covered next, with Spencer assisting on vocals. Then they reprised “Eyes of the World” before following up with the emotional song, “Days Between.”  For the final tune of the second set, the band returned to “Playing in the Band.” After a brief break, Weir & Wolf Bros returned to the stage for a sentimental encore take on “Ripple.”

The 50th-anniversary celebration continues tonight at Radio City Music Hall. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here, and stream the Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros live tonight on Fans.Live.
