Phil Lesh sat in with Midnight North once again at Canandaigua NY’s Lincoln Hill Farms on Friday night. The Grateful Dead bassist has joined Midnight North, the project fronted by his son Grahame Lesh, every night so far on their current spring tour.
On Friday, the elder Lesh emerged near the end of Midnight North’s set for the Grateful Dead-adopted “Viola Lee Blues.” He remained onstage for the Midnight North original “San Francisco Rain,” Mississippi Fred McDowell’s “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed & Burning” and the Dead sing-along “Ripple.”
Midnight North’s tour will continue in Marshfield, MA this evening.

June 15, 2021 at 1:15 pmWhy don’t you go check him out playing with his son before commenting? The guy is 81 and he looked as happy as could be up on stage playing with Grahame. I’ve seen the Dead and the other incarnations but I would not say I know much about them. However, after what I saw at Lincoln Hill, and being a dad myself, it certainly looked to me like a dad loving spending time with his wife and son WAAAYYY more than it was about being on tour. Considering the tour bus was on the side of the stage with Phil and Jill sitting in chairs in front of it, watching the music like the rest of us, then played a handful of songs… it was more like he was on vacation traveling in an RV with family than it was on tour with a behemoth group. I’d post my pictures to show you if I could do so here… give the guy a break, he wants time with his kid and it was a beautiful night (and only 10 minutes from my house, which was even better!!!)
