On Friday, Apr. 30, Gov’t Mule played their live first show in over a year in New Haven, Conn. The show marked the inaugural event at the Westville Music Bowl, a new venue that was converted from a tennis center.

The show began with “Lay Your Burden Down,” followed by “Bring On the Music.” Later in the set, guitarist and bandleader Warren Haynes ushered the band through a sandwich segment made up of “Trane” > “Doing It to Death” (a The J.B.’s cover) > “Trane.” The set closed with “Banks of the Deep End.”

Set two kicked off with “Time to Confess.” Later, Gov’t Mule delivered a cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline),” before kicking off “Rocking Horse.” The set finished up with two more covers: Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” and Al Green’s “I’m A Ram.”

For the encore, Mule opted to reprise “Bring On the Music” from the first set, before sending fans off with The Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See.”

The band will return to the Westville Music Bowl stage tonight (May 1) and tomorrow (May 2). For the May 2 performance, they will be joined by special guest Ann Wilson.
